Dolphin Stranding

Many thanks to Out&About for this picture of a dead dolphin washed up on the southeast side of Kilchoan Bay. It's about 8' long and at the high tide mark of spring tides. Since Out&About walks this area fairly frequently, he believes it can't have been here long.

The stranding has been reported to the Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust.

  1. Dr Conor Ryan, Science & Policy Officer at the Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust, writes, "Thanks very much for your report. This looks like either a striped or common dolphin (judging by the length of the ‘beak’ and the number of teeth). Given the extent of decay and lack of pigment in the skin, it is difficult to determine the species for certain. There have been at least 4 common/striped dolphins stranded on Mull/Iona/Ulva in recent weeks."
