West Ardnamurchan Community Development Company and Ardnamurchan Community Archaeology have called a meeting on Tuesday 20th October at 7pm in the Kilchoan Learning Centre to discuss proposed repairs to St Comghan's.
St Comghan's is the oldest building in the area, having parts which are older than Mingary Castle. The church, with its associated graveyard, is designated as a Scheduled Monument and as a Category B Listed structure. While it is owned by Highland Council, who have agreed to the repairs, application has to go to Historic Environment Scotland for permission to carry them out. This document is now ready to be sent, and WACDC understands that HES may be prepared to fund the cost of the works, up to £4,000, something it only does for Scheduled Monuments.
At the meeting, as well as the proposed repairs, the option of asking Highland Council to return responsibility for the building and graveyard to the community will be discussed,.Through the grants it can access, the community may be in a better position than Highland Council to carry out further repairs and improvements on the site.
