Stag in Velvet

We drove in to Fort William early this morning and came across this young red deer stag amongst the sheep grazing near the Ockle/Kilmory turn.  Like the sheep, he seemed in no hurry to get off the road and, when he did, stood looking at us for some time.  His antlers are in velvet, in preparation for the rut, which seems, this year, to be early.

A bit further along the road, just past Loch Mudle, we met a small group of stags.  Unlike the sheep, who are anxious not to miss the next mouthful of grass, and the first stag, these did the usual deer thing of panicking when they saw the car, and bolted across the road in front of it.
