Kilchoan Coastguard team were called out yesterday afternoon to assist in a search for a diver lost in the Sound of Mull. He was reported missing from the Ullapool-registered scallop boat Atlantia, and was last seen off the Red Rocks, in the middle of the Sound of Mull opposite Kilchoan, where he had entered the water at about 2.30pm.
Following a major sea search in which the Kilchoan team worked with the Tobermory Lifeboat, the Coastguard helicopter from Stornoway, the Kilchoan-Tobermory ferry and several fishing boats, the diver was located safe on the shore near MacLean's Nose at about 5.00pm. The Kilchoan team had nearly reached him, working their way along the beach from Mingary Castle, but it was his own boat that found him. He was picked up by the Coastguard helicopter and taken to hospital.
A call-out to lost divers is frequently a sorry affair, so it is very good to hear of one, in winter, with the diver in the water for over two hours, which turned out well.
