First Winter Weather

The first real winter weather has arrived in the last couple of days, with the wind swinging firmly into the northwest and bringing some hard hail showers that have rattled the roofs. Down the road towards Fort William the mountains are all capped with snow, and we were surprised this morning not to see snow on Ben Hiant and the high land across the Sound of Mull. That may soon change: XCWeather is forecasting snow down to ground level here on Sunday and Monday.

The Ballantrae-registered scallop boat Vervine, BA842, was fishing close against the Ormsaigbeg shore at midday, relatively protected from the wind and almost in sunshine...

....until, as she turned away onto the leg that would take her across the mouth of Kilchoan Bay towards the CalMac pier, a sleet shower bounced over the hill behind us and enveloped her.

Despite the deteriorating weather, we're still harvesting tomatoes from the greenhouse at the top of the garden - solid evidence of how mild the winter has been so far. A few are still up there so, unless we have some very cold weather, we might just harvest a Christmas tomato to sit on top of the plum pudding.
