The Diary once again carries exclusive pictures of maritime action in the Sound of Mull, this time revealing the hazards of participation in the West Ardnamurchan Regatta's Raft Race.
As reported in Tuesday's post, the most imaginative and best-designed raft was Chris Gane's Yellow Submarine with its crew of fourteen eager paddlers....
But what was not revealed were the lengths the Pirate Captain from Kilmory was prepared to go to in order to score his eventual success.
In the Diary's humble opinion this should have led to immediate disqualification and a ban from further competitive raft races. This is obviously also a view shared by the Pirate Captain's daughter, who provided the evidence.
Many thanks to Jac Crosbie and Ritchie Dinnes for the super pictures.
Not sure that I would agree that the aptly named Yellow Submarine (it was yellow and the crew ended up underwater) qualified as 'best-designed', in that it went over pretty much immediately it left the hard. A contender for the Mary Rose prize for 'looking good but not being very good at the whole going along on the water thing' perhaps.
ReplyDeleteAs to the alleged 'Pirate Captain' controversy, as an outsider it looks very much of a 50/50 to me. Mind, it's good to see that you do up there as we do down here in Norfolk: "Those bloomin' Kilmory types! They come over here with their fancy raft..."
Mind, thinking on, do you not have a prize for the best looking raft? If not, in the interest of encouraging more Yellow Submarine type innovation, I would happily throw in a couple of quid towards a trophy for next year.
ReplyDeleteI suppose it might be more appropriate to knock one up out of a tin mug, some wire and a bit of MDF, though...
Captain Gane here: I think there may have been an error in the calculation of my power to weight ratios. I will return.....
