Malcolm MacMillan
Over a hundred people, family, friends and members of the community, packed Kilchoan Parish Church this afternoon for the funeral of Malcolm MacMillan. Moving tributes were read to a man deeply respected by all who met him.
Malcolm came from an Achosnich family which moved to this beautiful farm at Grigadale. He and his wife later worked the farm until they retired to Carraig, a bungalow just short of the Lighthouse. Malcolm spent his whole life on Ardnamurchan, and was 82 when he died.
It was the sort of warm, sunny October day which Malcolm would have loved. This picture, taken this morning, looks along the Ormsaigbeg shoreline from just below the ruin of Caistel Dubh nan Cliar towards the houses of Kilchoan.
At one point, amongst the cobbles on the beach, were several of these plants, all in exuberant flower. They were growing so close to the tideline that, at high tide with an onshore breeze, they would have been covered in spray if not the waves. It might be Common Storksbill, Erodium cicularium, as this plant is happy to live by the sea. E. cicularium is a member of the geranium family, and is native to the Mediterranean, so these plants are a long way from home.

ReplyDeleteI had many happy holidays in caravans at Grigadale when I was a child. I shall show this to my mother Jean Dunkley. We remember Malcolm and Margaret, Ailie and Gillespie with great fondness and happy memories
