The house involved is the one on the left of the picture. It has only recently been completed, having been built on the site of, and incorporating the old structure of Peggy Rose's house. It's now called Tigh Peigi. It was occupied at the time, but the family safely evacuated the premises.
The fire seems to have started in the loft. By the time Kilchoan brigade reached the scene, it was well alight, with smoke billowing from the chimney area. As soon as they started to work their way towards the seat of the blaze, flames began to appear along the ridge and quickly spread. Water from the nearby hydrant was used, and hoses run across to Sanna Burn - all to no avail. The fire is still alight, so it looks as if the fire brigades will be on site all day.
Any event like this is a tragedy for those concerned. Our thoughts are very much with the family.
This is indeed a tragedy & highlights the problems if the fire fighters were also first responders. What if this was the case & someone elsewhere in Kilchoan had a medical emegency?
