The Distillery - Planning Comments

As part of Highland Council's planning process for the proposed distillery at Glen More, comments are being encouraged from members of the public. By their nature, such comments tend to come from those who strongly oppose the project, while those who support it feel less need to become involved. Planners therefore tend to get a skewed view of local opinion.

Local opinion, as expressed in January's well-attended meeting of West Ardnamurchan Community Council, seems to support the distillery. The meeting accepted Donald Houston's explanation of how Adelphi Distilleries was doing its utmost to ensure that the development would have as little impact on this beautiful area as possible. The fact that the distillery would provide four jobs, rising to as many as ten, weighed heavily on Council's view.

That this area is beautiful cannot be allowed to turn it into an environmental fossil. The people who live here must be allowed to develop it, and a multi-million pound building project can be achieved with care and sensitivity.

A large number of documents relating to the planning application, along with some of the public's comments, can be read on the Highland Council website here. In order to comment, members of the public have to register - a simple process. The Diary, famous for being very nervous of such tasks, has registered and commented. Because this development could be so important, it is to be hoped that many more will do the same.

Adelphi have organised a public 'drop-in' session at Glenborrodale Castle when the plans and other information about the distillery will be available. This takes place on Monday 13th February, between 3.00 and 6.30pm - all welcome.
