Greylag Geese

It's mid-February, and groups of greylag geese are overwintering in the croft and Estate fields around Kilchoan. While they're always wary, they usually allow approach to within about fifty metres, after which they start edging away....

....before they finally explode into flight.

On the ground they're slightly ungainly, but the take-off is spectacular and almost vertical....

.... and accompanied by "honk-honks" of annoyance.

The shooting season is now over for the kilchoan shooting club, it's been a poor year for woodcock in general. mostley down to the Italian shooter now covering the Scotish woodland to the west. It's been a good year for geese for us with even bean goose in on ground but as bean goose are protected they are left alone. Only 15 graylag shot for the year 10 duck .
