One of the joys of walking on West Ardnamurchan is that there are so few fences. Perhaps because we are thus so spoilt, there's always a sense of frustration when one appears and seems to hem one in. To make matters worse, this was a deer fence, almost impossible to cross.
It's a rare event when hill walking to come across deer that are oblivious to human approach, but the strong wind in our faces may have helped us approach very close to these two stags. They are in the process of shedding their horns - the one on the left has only one.
But, as we crept closer, we were spotted, and six red deer, the two stags and four hinds, got up from the heather and went away over the hill.
As we approached the end of the ridge we had closer views of the coastline. This picture looks northeast, down onto Swordle Bay, with Ockle Point beyond and, in the distance, the mountains of Moidart. The lone house at the back of the bay is available for rent from Ardnamurchan Estate, here.
To our left, we could see the whole coastline from Kilmory, on the right, through Achateny, on the left, to Fascadale in the distance.
By this time we were ready to turn back to the car, but at that point we saw a gate in the fence (see map) and, beyond it, another hill which we hadn't climbed.
Shedding their horns?
ReplyDeleteIts the rut right now, its antler more than likely got damaged in a fight.
They don't cast their antlers until March - April before growing new ones. The velvet "sheds" around July-August and the antlers harden out in time for the rut mid September - October.
I'm sorry - some confusion here. You are, of course, quite right about the time the antlers are shed, but this blog was written back in April - the date is given in the first of these three entries. I have been away on holiday for two weeks in a place with no internet access and, rather than let the Diary lapse, I put in something each day for people to read. Jon
ReplyDeleteThat'll teach me for not reading the title and noticing it was "Part 2" where "Part 1" clearly states April! :)
