Squat Lobsters - this one is
Galathea stringosa - are really a type of crab. They are caught as a by-catch in our local fishermen's prawn creels. There seem to be two local types. One is the common squat lobster, above, which makes good eating and has a limited market.
The other variety - the shallow water squat lobster - is not fished commercially, but he is rather pretty.

Many thanks to 'Kilchoan Early Bird' for pictures and information.
Yum Yum, my absolute favourite of all the shell fish on the West Coast of Scotland. Trouble is they are so difficult to find. Luckily I know a fisherman out of Glenuig who does catch them if I ask beforehand. The only other places I know where to get them are the cafe above Tobermory Calmac building and at the Kylesku Hotel in the far NW.
ReplyDeleteWas just given a bag of approx 100 of these at the campsite we we at near Glenuig by the prawn fisherman owner.
ReplyDeleteWonderful eating in a light tomato sauce .....
