November Weather Report

We enjoyed a total of 202mm of 'Kilchoan sunshine' this month, with only one day when we didn't have a drop.  Our 'sunniest' day was Sunday 18th, when we were treated to 25mm - almost exactly an inch in the old currency.  But the month's rain arrived relatively gently, with only a couple of occasions when the wind got up to speeds which might be called exciting, and certainly nothing which might be called a storm.  The most regular weather record in the month were the words 'showers with sunny intervals'.

Because some these showers were wintry, they fell as snow on the hills to the north and south of us.  This has given us some beautiful views - picture above shows Ockle, on the north coast of Ardnamurchan, with the hills of Moidart covered in snow.  We may not have had snow on the peninsula, but we did have hail, thunder and lightning, and power cuts to go with them.

For most of the early part of the month the wind tended to be in the south to southwest, but it veered into the north early on the 25th and stayed there, with the result that temperatures dropped and, that night, we had the first ground frost.  The coldest night was the 30th, when the air temperature in Ormsaigbeg fell to 0C.  While the early group of migrants from a cold Scandinavian winter, the fieldfares and redwings, had moved on by early in the month, the renewed cold weather brought the rare sighting in the village of a waxwing, presumably searching for the few berries that had been left by the earlier invading Scandinavian hoards.

If there is one outstanding memory of November's weather, it is of the succession of glorious sunrises we had towards the end of the month.
