Antarctic Adventure - 3

From Trevor Potts:

As we moved out of the Antarctic Sound we had a great sighting of orcas.

The fine weather continued. For the next two days there was barely a cloud in the sky with little wind and fierce sunshine and glare off the ice. We missed a whole day's landings in the Antarctic Sound due to high winds so the following day we a had a 7.00am start and did two landings before a late lunch, followed by another landing in the afternoon. The weather was what the Argentines call FANTASTICO. Our third landing of the day involved a climb of about 250ft up a steep snow slope to a beautiful viewpoint across Paradise Harbour. At least that is what the whalers called it before their factory ships processed all the whales there in the 1920s and 30s.

The following day we zodiac cruised among the ice in Pleneau Bay, another day of fine weather watching the gentoo penguins porpoise by.

The ice was pretty cool too, with many large icebergs and plenty of crabeater seals hauled out on the sea ice.

Onwards to the British historic base of Port Lockroy, now a museum and gift shop raising money for the British Antarctic Heritage Trust.

Between trips to Antarctica, Trevor runs the Kilchoan Campsite, website here.

  1. Fantastic Trevor. A gift shop in Antarctica eh? Whatever next? Sounds like the weather enabled you to make up for the disastrous day earlier on, but with different clients so I guess its the luck of the draw on these trips. Richard Clubley
