The Yeoman Bontrup caught fire yesterday afternoon and, at 11.30am today, was still burning. The Coastguard tug, Anglian Sovereign, is seen in the lowest picture, fighting the fire.
Thanks for posting the pics. Do you have any more?
I live on the Isle of Lismore and saw the smoke from the fire in the afternoon and dismissed it as granite dust from loading the ship (I couldnt see the ship from my position on Lismore just across the water from the quarry). An hour or so later I felt the shudder when something exploded on the ship and I then realised that it was a fire. A neighbour says he saw the explosion and the fire ball rose 800 feet into the air.
Looks like the fire is pretty well out now, (Saturday evening) but the implications for Aggregate Industries will be far reaching. They have 3 ships this size ( although I was under the impression they were in the region of 68 to 75 thousand tonnes payload). So the deliveries of stone products are likely to be delayed.
Your comment, D, confirms reports that the explosion was heard as far away as Appin - I hate to think what it was like for those on site fighting the fire.
The incident has been seriously under-reported in the Scottish press. I suppose Glensanda, and its local small communities such as Lochaline, are too far off the beaten track to bother with.
If anyone has further pictures they are prepared to have posted on this blog, I would be grateful for them. Please send them to kilchoandiary@btinternet.com
I was at work in the office of Ardtornish Estate when I heard a huge explosion and felt the ground vibrate a little. I suspected that the noise was from blasting not from the vessel on fire. Quite amazing to think this is all going on just a few miles from my workplace.
Glad to hear nobody has been killed or seriously injured from the incident. My fear now is of the pollution it may cause to the area.
Alas the "Yeoman Bonfire " has gone ?,where is she AIS has no trace of a dead ship , will she return shortly or is she bound for the beach in Pakistan for the breakers. Cometbouy on the Clyde.
Last seen in tow to the Netherlands, where her cargo and fuel oil was to be unloaded, after which she would be surveyed - so she might yet be a loss and broken up.
Ship berthed in dock in Ijmuiden in the Netherlands, clearly visible from DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam, not far from where ferry docks, generator and working portacabin onboard and some activity visible.
More photos of this ship after the fire can be seen on www.shipspotting.com, Casualties section, posted 31st July, 1st and 4th August 2010 showing her arriving at Ijmuiden
