Mammatus Clouds

Kilchoan Early Bird sends us these pictures of mammatus clouds over Ardnamurchan this afternoon. The reasons for their formation are complicated, the 'pouches' of cloud being cooler air moving downwards into warmer.

Mammatus clouds are most often associated with the cumulonimbus clouds of thunderstorms so their presence today, when we don't have cumulonimbus, suggests a different mechanism for their formation.

Many thanks to Kilchoan Early Bird for the pictures.
