Red Admiral

In yesterday's warm weather, this red admiral, Vanessa atalanta, was still flying around our garden. It's a migrant species, most coming in to Britain from central Europe, but they don't breed this far north. So this individual might survive into the winter, and may be seen flying again, but the new generation won't appear until May or June.

The male and female are very similar, but the male's undersides are slightly blue, so this is probably a male.
