With nothing better to do one wet and windy afternoon, the Diary set about searching the internet for an identification for this fungus. We had found it recently, in a very exposed location on the southwestern coast of Ardnamurchan, high up on a ridge above the sea. As so often seems to happen, there was....
....a small group of them, then we found no more.
The search terms 'spiny puffball' finally produced a picture which resembled these, of a puffball called Lycoperdon umbrinum. Can anyone confirm this identification or, if it's wrong, give the correct one?
