A Walk along Ormsaigbeg

A beautiful start to the day so we walked along the road that runs the length of Ormsaigbeg, the small crofting township in which we live. Just down the road from our house is Trevor Potts' nationally praised camp site. It's been fairly quiet for the last couple of weeks so it was good to see more campers enjoying its stunning setting. As we passed the tide was high on a spring tide, so some of the tents were pitched within feet of the water. There's a link to the campsite's website here.

Knowing that some members of the Kilchoan Pig Syndicate are Sunning themselves in Sunny Spain and might be worrying about their investments' well being, we thought we ought to check on the new pigs. They're fine, but they're missing Hughie something chronic. There's a worrying rumour abroad again that they're moving westwards in Ormsaigbeg, nearer our house.

In complete contrast, just below the pigs is this beautiful orchid. It's a common spotted, and it stands almost 18" high. There's a patch of them along the side of the ditch and they've done exceptionally well this year: perhaps the proximity of the pigs has helped.

Looking back from the jetty below The Ferry Stores, along the Ormsaigbeg coastline, some of the tents of Trevor's campsite can be seen close to the shore. Several of the campers have brought kayaks and canoes with them and, as can be seen, this is an ideal place to use them.

A flight of geese passed overhead, silhouetted against the sharp blue of the summer sky. It was difficult to tell what species they were but the pale undersides to the wings and the darker bodies suggest that these are barnacle geese.

Shouldn't a flock of geese in flight be described as a 'skein'?

  2. Absolutely right, and thank you for pointing out the error. 'Skein' is a word I love, it has a 'feel' to it, so I'm appalled that I didn't take the opportunity to use it.
