A close-up gives a clue as to how it was created. It's less a painting and more a collage or a construction, made from a variety of materials including what looks like polystyrene and draught excluder.
This picture shows how the artwork was designed and laid out, the component parts being added in the numbered white spaces.
Part of the work was in painting pieces of card which were then cut up to fit into the numbered spaces.
The Diary is no art critic but thinks this work is stunning. It's colourful, imaginative and cheerful. Congratulations to the Art Class and to Stephen French, the artist, on the right in a blue coat.
[If, like the artistically ignorant Diary, you're interested in an answer to the question "what is it supposed to BE?" then the photo here gives a clue]
Unaccustomed to effusiveness as I am, I have to say that is a cracking piece of work. I trust there will be postcards in the Ferry stores for when us grockles come rolling up in August. I'm thinking it could also look pretty special printed onto a transparency and stuck on a window. Bring on the 'Kilchoan school'!
