We're very pleased to report that the great spotted woodpecker seen briefly yesterday is back in the garden this afternoon - and making himself very much at home on The Diary's largest peanut feeder. The small birds seem to have accepted him, though they hurriedly gave way when he arrived on the bird table.
As Hilary Hizzard pointed out in her comment after yesterday's report - for which many thanks - this is a juvenile, and he's probably looking for a home. The prospect sounds expensive in peanuts.
Meanwhile, The Diary was summoned to the back garden by a family of furious wrens. For their size, these small birds each make more noise than Amy Winehouse on a good night out.
The cause of their anger was Bandit the cat, who had decided to take a siesta on the roof of the woodshed, close to where the parents were feeding their fledglings.
