That Dun We Couldn't Find

Some days ago, we spent a frustrating morning in search of the dun (a small castle) which lies about a kilometre to the south of Ockle - account here. We've since received an email from Dominic Cooper who lives at Swordle, very near the dun.

Dominic says, "Even nowadays with the trees growing quite high, the dun stands in open ground and, because of its height, has a view southwestwards over the trees. It’s been foul and misty — as you well know — these recent days but I remember going there on a bright day some years back.

"Standing in the middle of the dun and looking west, the skyline is blocked by the ridge of Druim an Scriodain (up behind my house). But to my amazement I saw that there was a nick or drop in the ridge at one point; and framed in this could be seen the summit cairn of Beinn an Leathaid, above the Braehouse. By chance? I rather think not."

We have arranged to meet Dominic and go in search of the dun together.

Dominic is a watch and clock repairer (website here), and a prize-winning author (one of his books is here)
