An Unusual Visitor

The Dairy hasn't seen a Great Spotted Woodpecker on West Ardnamurchan before. That it is rare isn't really surprising since there aren't too many trees here. No wonder it was flying around looking a little disorientated. The small birds didn't quite know what to make of it, flying alongside it and twittering until it was off their territory.

  1. From Hilary Hizzard:

The woodpecker pictured is a juvenile, which you can tell because of the large red patch on its head. Since it is on its own it has probably now left the parental home and is seeking to find suitable accommodation in Kilchoan. Hope it finds a suitable mate!

  2. Wow! It was a fantastic post and how I wish I could see a woodpecker, I never see a woodpecker in person. Nice photo and you did a great job.
