Typical October Weather

This was dawn today in Kilchoan - not the grey overcast the BBC promised and the rest of Scotland - particularly the east coast - seems to be suffering. The 'cloud' that's visible across the face of Morvern's hills is the end of a long finger of haar which stretched up Loch Sunart but burned away quickly as the sun rose.

The sea was like a millpond all yesterday and, as the sun painted colour into the landscape this morning, hills and sky were perfectly reflected in a glassy surface. This view was taken from the end of the jetty, looking west along the Ormsaigbeg shore to Maol Buidhe.

The weather confirms what the Diary has always said, that September and October are the most beautiful months of the year along this stretch of Scotland's west coast, yet the number of visitors has dropped drastically in the two weeks we were away. A couple met by the Coastguard station this morning couldn't believe their good fortune, not only in having such splendid weather, but also in having the walking, and the views, to themselves.
