Other People's Auroras

The Diary is becoming deeply depressed about the way that auroras are being seen by everyone except watchers on West Ardnamurchan.  Following Ewan Miles' super picture just over a week ago - see post here - here is a picture from the Canadian city of Edmonton, where the Diary's son lives.  We were over there only a fortnight ago, and spent time scouring the sky when auroras were forecast, but saw nothing.  This picture was taken a few days ago, and shows an aurora so strong that it outshines the city lights.

Please, please can we see one like that here!

Many thanks to David for the picture.

  1. My sympathies Jon. Such a hugely frustrating interest that nonetheless transfixes me since seeing one at Arisaig last August. Ovation Aurora and Spaceweather both indicate a sighting chance with you right now, if cloud permits.

  2. There could be some activity this weekend.

"The M-class flare peaked at 13:32 UTC on May 22, 2013 and produced a partial-halo coronal mass ejection (CME). We can expect a hit our geomagnetic field on May 24/25, 2013. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras."

The weather forecast looks promising at present too.

Here is an alternative site to aurora watch UK for a Magnetometer (this one is on Mull):

  3. Hi Andrew -

Many thanks for the warning. The weather looks promising here. Will alert the other local aurora watchers.
