The Perils of Antarctic Exploration

Our intrepid local explorer Trevor Potts, who runs the beautiful little camp site along the shores of Ormsaigbeg, details here, is once again in Antarctica, working as a lecturer and excursion guide on the cruise ship Clelia II out of Ushuaia. But Trevor's departure on his first trip was delayed when, northeast of the South Shetland Islands, the ship ran into severe weather and, after losing an engine, suffered extensive damage to her superstructure and communications systems.

Trevor takes up the story:
"Because it took so long to repair the damage from the first trip the next two were cancelled so I had a long holiday in Argentina. We finally left for Antarctica on 5th January and arrived back on 14th. Our communication system didn't work and we had no internet for 10 days. We leave again tonight.

"We had good weather with three sunny flat calm days out of the five in Antarctica, and the other two day weren't bad. We had fantastic humpback and killer whale sightings, also the usual crop of penguins with chicks. Hopefully the communications system will be fixed today and I can have email on the journey and not have to spend all my free time in port trying to catch up."

Spectacular video of the Clelia II in the storm is here, and a full account of the incident here.

Many thanks to Trevor for the photographs.
