The repairs to the slipway on the Nether Lochaber (Fort William) side of the Corran ferry started while we were away. We crossed on Saturday, the first day of the Scottish half term, at 11.30am, when we expected it to be very busy, but the delay was short and the arrangements seemed to us, and to one of the staff on the ferry, to be working well. However, later on Saturday, and on the previous day, there were long tailbacks onto the A82, so the best advice seems to be to avoid using Corran if possible.
A diversion takes cars to the right of the main slipway, across a bridge, and onto a fixed pontoon....
....against which the
Maid of Glencoul berths. She's the smaller of the two ferries,
Corran being away for her annual service, so this is one of the reasons for the delays.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency are still insisting that the ferry can only operate during daylight hours, so she is currently stopping at 7pm. There is also a 3 tonne weight restriction.
Work was continuing on Saturday, and Highland Council hope to have the slipway back in operation by 10th December.
