During our wanderings to the west of Achnaha on Sunday we came across one area of land which, given another month, would have been covered in bracken, a sure sign that it was once worked as arable land. In it we found several of these thistles, which didn't appear anywhere else.
I think they are marsh thistles, Cirsium palustre, which are described as being 'common in wet places'. While Ardnamurchan in general has been pretty wet recently, this little field is, by local standards, fairly well drained.
