Many thanks to Paul H for sending me these pictures of an object he found at Swordle during his recent holiday here.
He and I are both intrigued as to what it could be. Paul describes it as, "Very light, a bit like coral." Has anyone a suggestion?
Sheep's scapula?
ReplyDeleteNo, bigger - how about bovine?
ReplyDeleteLooks like well weathered bone
ReplyDeleteHow about marine e.g. A bit of whale vertebrae or similar
ReplyDeleteLooks like bone. Scapula or, a component of a pelvis?
ReplyDeleteLooks like whale bone. Whalebone is porous like that and full off oil when the whale is alive.

HM Coastguard blew up a whale using explosives some years ago at Ockle, in the bay by the bothy on the shore. There are still bits of bone to be found there. Perhaps it's a piece of whalebone that's drifted down the coast. Jon
ReplyDeleteAmanda Clydesdale comments, "It may well be whalebone. I've worked on archaeological whalebone, it has been used for everything from bowls, door pivots, gravestones, loom weights, structural (constructional) elements and even as fuel, because of its high oil/fat content. Might be worth carefully checking for signs of working."
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely a bit of whale bone. I've got some just like it from a Fin Whale washed up in Cumbria. Richard
