It's Spring!

The temperature at midday was 2C, a bitter force 5 northeaster, gusting to 7, has been blowing horizontal slush all day, we've not seen the sun, the sea is grey and miserable, yet Kilchoan's first lambs chose to make their entry into the World today, one born this morning, the other this afternoon shortly before this picture was taken.

The twins are looking good so owner Nan MacLachlan is optimistic that they'll survive the night. Last year her gamble with early lambs paid off handsomely as they arrived in cold but dry weather, but they weren't the first: that honour went to an Ormsaigbeg lamb which arrived on the night of February 28th.

Thanks to Gill for the photo.

....Okay, okay, so sometimes The Diary gets things wrong. Nan's aren't the first lambs. This year that honour goes to Dave Cash, who has - so Hughie MacLachlan tells me - something like eighteen of them in the field above Meall mo Chridhe.
