Snow & Sleet

It snowed and sleeted on and off all night, yesterday's northeasterly picked up still more, and the mercury has once again struggled to reach above 2C, but The Diary is pleased to report that Nan's twin lambs are fine.

Normally a northeaster is a welcome wind as it brings us sunshine, but this one has travelled across the Highland snowfields and carries nothing but grey clouds and a bitter chill. This view looks across the mouth of Kilchoan Bay to Maclean's Nose, with the wind sweeping across the water and the snow almost down to the waterline.

Contrast the drab colours of the first picture with this one, taken on Thursday when a westerly was blowing, spattering the sea with whitecaps and throwing waves against rocky Glas Eilean, the grey island.

For those, like Alasdair MacLachlan, who had to be out and about this morning, the snow had accumulated, as it always does, along the road at the back of Ben Hiant. This view looks north across Loch Mudle to Eigg in the distance.

And these are the white-out conditions to the south of the road, on the slopes up to Ben Hiant and Beinn na h-Urchrach.

Many thanks to Alasdair and Morven for pictures 3 & 4
