The Last Round

A postie drives his van along the road at the end of a day's round - but this one is slightly different, because it's a last round after a working life given to serving this small community.

Gillespie Cameron arrived back at Kilchoan Post Office yesterday afternoon to be greeted by a large crowd which had gathered to mark the occasion. Jonathan Ball, Kilchoan's subpostmaster, Mairi Hunter, our other postie, and the shop staff provided a splendid spread of drinks and food....

....the centrepiece of which was Lynne Prewett's magnificent cake, such a masterpiece that Gillespie couldn't bring himself to cut it.

Gillespie has been West Ardnamurchan's postie for over 37 years, following in his father's footsteps. His dedication to his work, his meticulous care of our post, his determination to deliver even in the most appalling weather, the care he has shown his customers - he won an award for saving one customer's life because he noticed something amiss and acted - are a credit to him and an inspiration to all.

Thank you, Gillespie!
