A Boat-full

Over the 48-hour period starting 9am on Friday we had some 45mm of liquid Kilchoan sunshine, 21mm of it on Friday and 13mm in only a few hours on Saturday morning, all brought in on a steady westerly. We reckon the waterproofs we wear are good for just about anything, but walking during the last few days even our gear couldn't cope.

By sunrise this morning the wind had swung into the north-north-east, a direction which always brings cold but fine weather. This is dawn, with the sun rising shortly after 8am, well round into the south-east at this time of year.

An hour later the clouds had cleared but a light mist hung across the hills of southern Mull. The ship passing the mouth of Tobermory Bay is the Lys Foss, and in the distance is one of the CalMac ferries.

The Diary remembers that when we first came up here, as visitors staying in one of Steading Holidays' letting cottages, we bought Night Falls on Ardnamurchan and were puzzled at old Alasdair Maclean's near-obsession in his diary with the daily weather. Now, having lived here for some years, the Diary understands.

  1. Having stood out in torrential rain for 2 hours organising the unloading of a lorry and wearing very cheap waterproof trousers and jacket bought in the sale from a catalogue dealing in cotton goods, I was bone dry inside except for a small spot at the top of the zip! Just goes to show, the expensive names dont always guarantee full protection!

  2. Yes, but some of us were walking, at our usual fast rate, not just standing around supervising while other people did all the hard work.
