Another of the enterprises which has started recently is a community garden. Set up on land leased to the project by Helen Ferguson at the Sonachan, the garden has attracted a £67,000 grant from the Climate Challenge Fund. This has funded the purchase of polytunnels, fencing, sheds, plants and seeds, will pay for a water supply and the cost of bringing electricity onto the site, and has enabled the appointment of three part-time workers.
On Friday, in beautiful weather, a large group gathered to plant potatoes. 600 square yards of field were sown with Pentland Crown, Nadine, Foremost and International Kidney (Jersey Royal).
The project now has a constitution and an elected management committee, but it is run under the umbrella of the West Ardnamurchan Community Council. It has a website,
here.
Many thanks to Tom Bryson for the photos.
Congratulations what brilliant idea
ReplyDeleteThanks Joan. It is worth pointing out that the garden is, in the first year anyway, a not for profit enterprise. It is a free resource for everybody in the area to use to find out more about growing fruit and vegetables, as well as making it easier for local people with the knowledge already to grow and eat more local, seasonal food. It's our garden let's use it!
