Seaweed Time

We're running a bit late this year in getting the vegetable garden ready for the season's planting, so we've only just got round to the annual chore of collecting seaweed from the beach below the house and carrying it up to the back garden.

The weed along the tide line at the moment is absolutely perfect for the job, fresh, varied, and already fairly well chopped up by the waves.

The generations of good people who have lived along Scotland's west coast must have been connoisseurs of this wonderful, free fertiliser, and knew how to use it to its best advantage. We dig back a layer of earth, then....

....spread about a bucketful per square metre before digging it in and then replacing the layer we removed. This way, all the weed is covered and won't dry out, and the worms can get to it to start the process of breaking it down.
