An Exciting Sky

Discerning followers of The Diary will have noticed that entries over the last two weeks have been of the 'canned' variety.  Please accept apologies for this, but we've been on holiday in a place out of reach of the internet, and these entries were scheduled in advance, in preference to closing The Diary down for the duration.

While we've been away the sky has been full of excitement.  Nick Winter wrote of his experience of seeing what might have been debris burning up in the atmosphere above Ardnamurchan (entry here), but here is a picture taken by the ever-watchful Kilchoan Early Bird who said that the blazing object seemed so close it 'went by his door'.

Then, in the early hours of yesterday morning, the sky was lit by an aurora.  Plenty of warning was given by Aurorawatch - The Diary has discovered how to have a text alert sent to a mobile phone - but we received it in the arrivals hall of Heathrow Airport.  Photos of the event were taken from Mull - see Ewan Miles' blog here.
