First Signs of Spring

We're caught in a strong run of southwesterlies at the moment, bringing sharp hail showers between glorious sunny intervals. In winds that have been gusting to force 8 a French trawler, the Jack Abri II, struck rocks off the north of Rum in the early hours of this morning and was subsequently wrecked. Her fourteen crew were winched to safety by the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter, report here and very sad pictures here.

Proper Kilchoan winter weather - so it was good to find, on a walk down through the village, the first tentative signs of spring. The snowdrops in these pictures are in the drive up to Meall mo Chridhe, pushing their way up through the leaf litter under the big sycamores.

The weather forecast for the next few days is worse. XCWeather is predicting winds of 40+ mph gusting to 69mph for Kilchoan on Thursday evening, that's force 12, and more of the same on Friday.

So, while it was good to see this new arrival in Angus-John's field at the top end of Ormsaigbeg, born last night, he's going to have a rough ride over the next few days.

  1. Ah, snowdrops. We have some in our courtyard, but they won't blossom here for a couple months.
