Although it looks like some sort of alien aviator, this is
Tabanus sudeticus, a large cleg - to use its local name - known as a horse fly in England, except this particular specimen is a special subspecies called a llama fly, since it enjoys harassing Les Humphreys' llamas.
Along with the dreaded midge, clegs are a feature of Highland summers - except, this year, with the dull weather, we've been enjoying a relatively midge-free time.
