First Mackerel

Here's a sign that summer may finally be on our doorstep, with Kilchoan Early Bird sending in this picture of the season's first mackerel catch.  That the mackerel are running may explain why people are seeing so many gannets around the coast, a welcome sight after so few visited us last summer.

Not that the passengers on the Portuguese cruise ship Azores would have believed that summer was almost here.  The ship anchored off Tobermory this morning but, in increasingly poor weather and with a strong southeasterly blowing, she moved into the middle of the Sound before....

....giving up and heading towards the open sea - even though, just at that moment, the weather cleared and the local ferry, the Loch Linnhe, now doing Sunday sailings, set off from Tobermory to cross the Sound to Kilchoan.

The Azores' passengers were very unlucky: we've had some beautiful weather over the last few days.

Many thanks to Kilchoan Early Bird for the mackerel picture.
