It must be every small bird's worst nightmare when a cuckoo settles on a post overlooking its reedy neighbourhood, as happened yesterday evening in the reed bed by Hughie's field in Kilchoan.
In no time the cuckoo was diving into the reeds, returning to the post pursued by irate local residents....
....even though what it was actually doing was grabbing a snack - a large caterpillar.
Nevertheless, it was with some relief that the small birds saw the cuckoo fly off, perhaps this time to do some serious egg laying.
