British Soldiers

The Ardnamurchan Community Archaeology group were out this morning looking at the remains of a clachan on the north coast when Wendy MacFadyen spotted this splash of red on one of the moss-covered boulders.

Its common name is British soldiers, a lichen which, while not rare, often turns up in unexpected places - like in the middle of an expanse of rather boggy land.  There are some very interesting facts about British soldiers here, but what was so beautiful about this find was that it was surrounded by a delicate miniature garden of mosses and lichens.
