Archaeological Planning

The archaeologists from the Ardnamurchan Transitions Project have been staying at Swordle Bay House for the last couple of weeks planning activities for the 2013 'season'.  They will be returning to Swordle in the summer, and anticipate that they will continue their work there for two or three more years.

Walking over the ground with them gave some idea of both the archaeological richness of this small piece of West Ardnamurchan and the complexity of setting up a dig here.  One of the main items of discussion was deciding where they would apply for permission to dig in the legally protected chambered cairn - seen in this picture.

Once again they are very keen indeed to involve the public in this exciting work.  They are proposing

  • An evening talk, describing the successes of last year's dig, which will be run in the Kilchoan Community Centre
  • An Open Day
  • A repeat of the much enjoyed events for children
  • A course for people who would like to be more involved in mapping the local archaeology.  This would be a one-day event, involving some classroom teaching followed by practical work in the field
  • Opportunities for anyone who would like to work with them on one of the digs.

More details of all these will follow before the summer.

Cara Jones of Archaeology Scotland also suggested the community might wish to become involved in the Adopt-a-Monument scheme.  There's more about the scheme here.  If anyone is interested, please contact The Diary.
