September Light

This morning's early sunshine glitters across Kilchoan Bay as the Ullapool-registered trawler Accord motors slowly along the coast.  It turned into a typical September day with a brisk northwesterly breeze bringing in sudden showers, and the long sunny intervals between beautifully warm.  It also provided the sort of limpid light for which western Scotland's autumn is famous - perfect for photography.

The changeable weather provided a problem which the more intelligent of our two cats solved by taking refuge under a cloche - protected from the wind and rain, and warm.

We've seen this boat before, cruising along the coast, but she's infuriating in that her name is printed so small on her hull that it's illegible.  However,  she came in close enough for the stencilling on her lifebelts to be decipherable in this morning's light.  She's the Kylebhan, a cruise ship out of Glasgow run by Kylebhan Charters.  They seem to have the same attitude towards publicity online as they do at sea - take a look at their very informative website here.  The men on deck were fishing in a lazy way.

We were down at the bay below the house this afternoon carrying out one of those autumn tasks which are always done reluctantly - tying down the kayaks we keep at the top of the beach.  We don't usually do it this early, but the forecast is for some fairly strong winds in the next 36 hours - check the forecast at what is usually the most accurate site, here.  We're more careful about this since we saw one of the kayaks doing cartwheels during last December's storm, almost ending up in the sea.

  1. I just checked the weather forecast on that site. Lower down the page it provides a little information about Kilchoan. Apparently it is a "populated place" with a population of zero!
