Herons

At this time of year the local grey herons, usually rather solitary birds, seem to become unusually sociable, sometimes gathering in quite large, if rather dispersed groups. These three were flying around Kilchoan Bay this morning, calling, the sound not unlike a crow with a sore throat.

It was a damp start to the day, with 25mm of rain, most of it overnight, to add to the 20mm in the previous twenty-four hours. But the monochrome views across the Sound, its surface hardly disturbed by either swell or breath of wind, were magical.
