Pearl Mussel Project Returns

Diane Baum, right, and Lucy Ballantyne of the Lochaber Fisheries Trust are returning to Ardnamurchan on Tuesday to see whether the pearl mussels are releasing their larvae - see previous post here. They would like to welcome anyone who is interested and might be free to help them, even for an hour or two.

If the mussels are ready to release their larvae they will then keep them in a bucket and catch fish which will be put into the larvae buckets for a few seconds to make sure the larvae get a good chance to find a fish host. It should be a good opportunity to see both mussels and fish. If however the larvae aren't ready to be released they will return the mussels to the burn and move onto the next burn.

If anyone is interested the meeting place on the first day, Tuesday, at 11am, is the small car park on the Ardnamurchan Lighthouse road about 2km after taking the left turn at Achosnich. It's just before the Grigadale Caravan Park entrance, at the start of the path to Bay MacNeil. The grid reference is NM426673. Alternatively, contact kilchoandiary@btinternet.com, and I will let you have their email address so you can arrange a time to meet them.
