Large Meals

Many thanks to Les Humphreys for these pictures of birds at their meal times.

One thinks of pied wagtails as having a preference for insects but, over the recent cold snap, we had them under the seed feeders enjoying whatever the chaffinches threw down to them. Now Les' photo reminds us that they're very happy to take worms as well as small molluscs such as slugs.

We all know that herons eat fish but this spectacular picture shows a grey heron with an oversize meal. Les doesn't say whether the bird managed to swallow the flat fish.

Many thanks, Les, for the pictures.
