Wader's Nest

Ritchie Dinnes has kindly sent in these pictures from the north coast showing a nest he, wife Liz and grand-daughter Edie found close to the beach on an outcrop of grassy rocks.  As Ritchie says, "It's wonderful to be able to enjoy the natural world at this time of year," but he, like the Diary, always wants to know what, exactly, he has stumbled upon.

He managed to get a distant shot of the parent, and at first thought it might be a knot.  He revised his identification to a dunlin, but its dark chest doesn't seem to fit either identification.  Sandpiper is a possibility - but I think we need help.

  1. May I suggest it ibeing Common Sandpiper going by the eye stripe?

  2. The bird pictured is a Common Sandpiper though the eggs are darker than typical. Good find Ritchie and family - remember you from the Natural History Centre.

Common Sandpiper. Eye stripe and white at front of closed wing are giveaways. Nice dunlins on the beach at Kilmory when we were up.
