Request for Identification

Last Easter, while staying at The Kennels on Pier Road, we spotted this butterfly (moth?). It was about three inches across.

Can anyone identify it?

  2. I think it maybe be an Emperor moth... but I'm no expert!

  3. It is a male Emperor moth (Saturnia pavonia). The males have bright orange hindwings and are day-flyers (the females fly at night and are greyer in colour). Emperor moths are usually on the wing April-May.
