Community Garden News

From Richard van de Peer

It’s been a couple of months now since we’ve posted an update from the community garden. Since our last one we've finished the poly tunnel, the shed is under construction and we are beginning to think about putting in fruit trees and planting hedges for shelter. We are also starting to open up new areas for cultivation and are in the process of planning and planting our crops for the winter and into next year.

We have had great success in distributing our produce to the local community and have raised approximately £150 in donations for local good causes such as the Kilchoan Playpark and The West Ardnamurchan Jetty Association. Many thanks to all those who have supported us.

People in the area will have noticed that there is now a produce stand - albeit in a distinctly rustic style - in the Community Centre, as we now have an agreement to use the Centre as a drop off point for our veg boxes and also for individual items too as and when they come into readiness. Thanks to Aija, Chrissie, Fiona and Irene at the Centre for help with setting this up. This is an important development for us at the garden as it enables us to distribute our produce from a location which is at the centre of the local community. It will also bring the garden to the attention to the large numbers of visitors who use this busy centre.

If you haven’t seen the stand yet then pop by and pick yourselves up some veg. It’s mostly tatties and cabbage at the moment but the cauliflower is coming on nicely as are the leeks and the celery. Look out for pumpkin quarters too!

  2. These types of gardens are now in latest trend therefore we should grow some fruits and vegetables in this manner to get maximum of the output.
