About Kilchoan

Kilchoan is a remote Scottish crofting village at the westernmost end of the Ardnamurchan peninsula, a two-hour drive to the west of Fort William. Its white houses are strung like pearls around a wide bay, looking out across the Sound of Mull to Tobermory. The year-round population of the village itself is just over a hundred, but this diary writes about all the villages of western Ardnamurchan, including Portuairk, Sanna, Achosnich, Achnaha and Kilmory.

West Ardnamurchan Booklets

West Ardnamurchan Booklets

West Ardnamurchan Booklets

These booklets about West Ardnamurchan are available to purchase from The Ferry Stores, Kilchoan Community Centre, Ardnamurchan Lighthouse and other local and Tobermory outlets.

Booklet 1 is a description by Mary MacGillivray of her upbringing during the 1930s on a croft in Ormsaigbeg, the profits from which go to Kilchoan Community Centre

Booklet 2 is a guide book to local historical sites, including Camas nan Geall, the Ormsaigmore chambered cairn, and Mingary Castle, the profits going to Kilchoan Playpark.

Booklet 3 includes a fascinating series of extracts from Kilchoan Primary School's Log Book covering the years 1916 to 1933, profits to Kilchoan School Fund.

Booklet 4 contains recollections of Kilmory in 1930 by Joey MacKenzie, West Ardnamurchan's oldest resident, profits to Kilchoan Community Centre.

Clan MacIain, by Tim Steele, tells the history of the rise and fall of the great clan which once ruled Ardnamurchan. At one time advisors to and allies of the Lords of the Isles, the clan was utterly destroyed, leaving only Mingary Castle as a testament to its one-time power.

Five Award-winning Short Stories include The Crossing, which won the Bridport International Short Story Award, and Bendera Beach, winner of the Royal Society of Literature's V S Pritchett Prize.
